How to Get Started in Indiana Real Estate
If you have ever considered becoming a real estate agent in the state of Indiana, then the first step is knowing how to actually obtain a real estate agent license. The field of real estate has become exceedingly popular in recent years, with a 60% uptick in people getting their real estate licenses.
Part of the reason this career path is so appealing is that being a real estate agent offers a lot of autonomy and flexibility in the types of property they would like to focus on, how they promote themselves, and how often they work.
It is also an accessible job that does not require a college degree.
For anyone thinking of becoming a real estate agent, there is one major task that must be accomplished: taking the Real Estate Exam and passing it to earn your real estate license.
We want to help make sure you understand the full scope of getting your real estate license in the state of Indiana. Follow along for more information on the requirements of getting a real estate license and how we can help you prepare for all of these required steps.
What is Required to Become a Licensed Real Estate Agent?
To become a licensed real estate broker in Indiana, one must meet all of these requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must have obtained a high school diploma or equivalency certificate (GED)
- Successfully complete 90 hours of approved real estate education
- Schedule the Indiana broker licensing exam via PSI
- Successfully pass the Indiana Broker Real Estate Exam, which consists of 2 parts
- Be sponsored by an actively licensed real estate managing broker
The state exam that is required for folks pursuing their license includes two individual parts that need a score of 75 on each part to pass. Those two parts are the General (National) portion, and the Indiana State-specific portion.
There is no age limit to becoming a real estate broker, except being above the age of 18 at the time of beginning the testing process. Many successful brokers continue their careers until their late 70s due to the amount of success they experience throughout their time.
The exams, however, are not free to take. Each time someone wants to take the exam, there is a $54 fee for each attempt. If you do not pass the exam on the first attempt, do not panic. You have up to one calendar year to pass the State test after graduating from the course and the test can be taken as many times as needed in that year.
If you are already a licensed broker in another state, there is a possibility that you do not have to complete all of these steps to get a license in Indiana. If you are licensed in Illinois, the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency tends to work with those individuals to get their license transferred to an Indiana real estate license.
Preparing for the Indiana Real Estate Exam
There are a few resources available to help one prepare for taking the exam and the world of real estate itself.
Begin Your Research
One resource is the Between the Lines podcast, available on Spotify and Apple podcasts. The podcast provides an insight into the valuation process, with the purpose of helping real estate agents both see the “behind the curtain” of an appraiser’s mind and give helpful tips to agents to guide them in creating their CMAs and provide a more credible opinion of value for their clients.
They provide real-world examples of situations and issues seen in the daily valuation process and talk through how agents can use the information they discuss to better understand those pesky appraisers.
There is also the IREI Blog. The Indiana Real Estate Institute blog is specifically for students in Indiana to help further their education no matter where they’re starting, providing an accessible experience for anyone interested in the field of real estate.
