To become a real estate broker in Indiana, you’ll need at least your high school diploma or GED. Then, you’ll need to take further specialized courses to better prepare yourself for the work and familiarize yourself with the industry. The path to becoming a real estate agent varies from state to state in the U.S., but in Indiana, it is pretty straightforward. In addition to a high school diploma or GED, you’ll need to take pre-licensing courses, complete an exam, and work with a broker to prepare yourself to work in the field. Obtain Your High School Diploma Or GED

In order to become a real estate agent in Indiana, you must have a high school diploma or GED, or equivalent. There is no college degree required to become a real estate agent in the state of Indiana. You also must be 18+ years of age in order to complete the prerequisites to become a real estate broker in Indiana. While some states require real estate agents to be 21+ to become a broker, Indiana has no such requirement.

Take A Pre-Licensing Course

courseThe first step to becoming a licensed real estate agent in Indiana after you finish high school is to complete your approved 90-hour pre-licensing course. You can take a pre-licensing course in a traditional classroom setting or online from home.

In most cases, both formats offer the same information and curriculum requirements online and in-person—but there are some differences that may make one option more appealing to you than another. Pass Pre-Licensing Course Exams

To complete your 90 hours of training during your Indiana real estate pre-licensing course, you will be required to take three exams to test your knowledge of the real estate industry. You will need to score at least 75% on the tests in order to pass and move on to the Indiana Real Estate Exam.

Pass Indiana Real Estate Examination

To get your real estate license in Indiana, you’ll need to take and pass the state-administered exam administered by PSI called the Indiana Real Estate Examination. The exam must be taken within one year of completing the pre-licensing course and covers general law, ethics, and practice management, as well as financing and real estate transactions. It has 125 questions.

The Indiana Broker Pre-licensure Exam includes two separate sections, of which students must pass both:

  1. National section with 75 multiple-choice questions, worth 80 points. The passing score is 60 points. The time allowed is 150 minutes.
  2. State section with 50 multiple-choice questions, worth 50 points. The passing score is 38 points. The time allowed is 90 minutes.

Students are able to take an in-person proctored exam or a virtually proctored exam from a distance. You will need to earn at least a 75% on the test in order to pass, much like the tests in a broker pre-licensing course.

To prepare for the Indiana Real Estate Examination, you should ensure that you pay attention during your pre-license course and study outside of class, too. If you want extra assurance that you will pass the exam, you might consider signing up for additional exam prep courses.

Find A Sponsoring Broker

Once you have successfully passed the Indiana Real Estate Examination, you’ll need to find a sponsoring broker. Your sponsoring broker will serve as your mentor, showing you how to get started first-hand in your journey to becoming an excellent broker. Complete Your Application

The final step to becoming a licensed real estate agent in Indiana is to complete the application. The application will allow you to formally obtain your Indiana real estate license, awarded to you by the Indiana Real Estate Commission.
